Tigers wheelchair rugby team ready for new season

Leicester Tigers wheelchair rugby team are back in action this weekend as they start the new season taking part in the first BT Super Series Division One tournament of 2018/19.

Last season’s champions will be hoping to retain their title beginning at Fenton Manor Sport Complex in Stoke-on-Trent this Saturday, Oct 20, with the semi-final and final played on Sunday, Oct 21.

Darren Matthews' squad have been working hard in preparation for the new season, with four Tigers’ players involved with Team GB’s fourth-place finish at the World Championships in Sydney this summer.

“It was a fantastic experience for us all involved”, Darren said. “We wanted to go one step better and reach the final, but it shows just how close we are to the best in the world.

“Nick, Jamie, Muhammad and Gavin did themselves and Leicester Tigers proud, and myself and Rob (Tarr) have taken away some great learnings that we know will benefit the club this season.”

Talking at the club’s training session at Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre, Darren is keen for the squad to continue where they finished last season.

The club is great position to build on last season’s success and with the depth and experience we have across the board, we want to be challenging for even more silverware.

“We’ve added a few new players to the team, and are hopeful to introduce a second team to help support the development pathway.

“We’ve been working on a few technical elements and specific plays and we’ve prepared well over the last few weeks and it’s important that come Saturday, we are focused and pick up where we left off.”

The BT Super Series Division One is the sport’s top division and see’s eight of the UK's best teams battle it out over three two-day tournaments.

The tournament returns to the Leicester Arena on the weekend of November 24 – 25 before heading to Stoke Mandeville on January 26 – 27.
