Tigers win double at sports awards

Leicester Tigers picked up two trophies at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards in Derby on Monday evening, with Martin Corry named the region's Sports Personality of the Year.

Corry, who picked up the award after being shortlisted alongside Leicester’s international hockey star Christa Cullen, snooker world championship finalist Mark Selby and Nottinghamshire cricketer Ryan Sidebottom, said: “It has been a very interesting year, it possibly encapsulates my whole career with some lows and some highs.

“We didn’t quite manage to win the World Cup but as time goes by you can start looking back on games with a huge amount of pride.

“And if Leicester Tigers were not successful I would not be here. The work of Pat Howard and the squad last season getting to three finals was phenomenal.”

Tigers hooker George Chuter joined Corry to accept the Team of the Year award in recognition of reaching those three finals and picking up the Guinness Premiership and EDF Energy Cup titles.

Corry also collected a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of his former Tigers and England colleague Martin Johnson.
