Toomua injury 'not as bad as it looked'

Matt Toomua suffered “bone bruising” in the collision which forced him off the field in the European Champions Cup win over Castres Olympique at Welford Road on Saturday.

The Australian centre has been in prime form since his return to the Leicester Tigers midfield after a knee injury, but head coach Matt O’Connor says the diagnosis this time is not such a long-term injury.

“The injury is not as serious as it looked at the time,” said O’Connor. “Matt has some bone bruising, but the knee ligament is sound.

“The difficulty around bone bruising is you do not know exactly how long it will take to recover but hopefully he will not miss too many games for us.”

Ellis Genge has been cleared to play after leaving the field with an ankle injury against Castres.

“He’s fine,” confirmed O’Connor. “Ellis didn’t even need a scan on the ankle in the end. It was just a bit of a twist to the ankle and he will be involved this weekend.”

Tigers head to Newcastle Falcons on Sunday (3.00pm) in Round 7 of the Aviva Premiership season.
