Leicester Tigers welcomed 30 teams to take part in an under-sevens tournament during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend before going to Welford Road to see Aviva Premiership rugby as Tigers beat Newcastle Falcons 30-3.

Teams from Leicestershire and Rutland, Shropshire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire and Norfolk arrived to play at The Lancaster Academy in Leicester for a tag rugby festival.

The festival concluded with an afternoon trip to Welford Road, where teams could join the Junior Tigers Club activities before watching the senior rugby action.

Noel Davenport, a volunteer referee for Tigers and Mini & Junior Chairman of Leicester Forest RFC, said: “It was great to have so many teams involved and to chat to clubs from all over the UK in a friendly atmosphere. There was some top tag rugby on show and parents and coaches praised the set-up. Days like today are what local rugby is all about.”

Barry Dean, under-7s representative for Peterborough RUFC, added: “What a day! I would like to say a big thank you on behalf of PRUFC and the under-7s. It was a fantastic event for all and was well organised.

“The kids loved the atmosphere of the Welford Road stadium and it was a nice touch to get involved with the Junior Tiger Club activities before the start of the game.”

Festivals take place throughout the season, with the next one scheduled for under-eights teams taking place around Tigers’ next home fixture against Sale Sharks on Saturday, April 29.
