Welcome to Leicester Tigers | Attack Coach, Peter Hewat

Leicester Tigers are pleased to welcome Attack Coach, Peter Hewat to the club.

Born in Inverell, New South Wales, after years of toiling in Sydney's Shute Shield competition, Hewat was 27 when he began his professional rugby career with the Waratahs in Super Rugby. Known for his exceptional goal-kicking and versatility, Hewat quickly established himself as a prolific scorer in the Southern Hemisphere's premier competition.

Over four seasons with the Waratahs, he amassed over 600 points in 50 matches, setting a rookie record with 243 points in his debut season.

Despite his success, a call-up to the Wallabies never materialised so in 2007, Hewat made the decision to join London Irish, where he quickly became one of the league's elite points machines.

Over three seasons, he made 78 appearances and scored 491 points. Notably, he played at fullback in the 2009 Premiership final against Leicester Tigers, hitting a memorable drop-goal early in the game.

Hewat then moved on to play and then coach at Suntory Sungoliath, before moving back to Australia to join Dan McKellar’s staff at the ACT Brumbies.

Together, the duo built the Brumbies into a highly competitive outfit in Super Rugby, though COVID-19 would ultimately halt their progression.

Sitting in 1st place when Super Rugby was forced to shut down in 2020, the Brumbies gathered themselves to win the Super Rugby AU competition, which would be Hewat’s last game with the Brumbies.

With professional rugby in flux in Australia, an opportunity to join BlackRams Tokyo saw Hewat leave the Brumbies.

After three seasons as a head coach in Japan, Hewat now joins McKellar again, tasked with taking Tigers attack forward this season.

Leicester Tigers Attack Coach, Peter Hewat said: “I’m excited to be joining Leicester Tigers.

“Having played in the Premiership previously, and having experienced the incredible atmosphere at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, I have an understanding of the history and expectations of the club and I’m determined to help achieve success here.

“This is a world-renowned team and I’m looking forward to working with Dan and the rest of the coaching group to help the team reach its goals and grow our attack.”
