Welford Rd crowds reach milestone

Figure image
Leicester Tigers' average attendance for Guinness Premiership games at Welford Road this season has topped 17,000 for the first time.

The club installed a new temporary stand for the start of this season which increased capacity beyond last season’s level and, with five league fixtures played at Welford Road so far, the average home gate stands at 17,075.

That figure will increase again this weekend with the Guinness Premiership match against Sale Sharks already a sell-out with 17,498 tickets sold.

Club chairman Peter Tom said: “This is the pick of this week’s Guinness Premiership fixtures, between the last two league champions, and it is a fantastic effort to have a sell-out crowd on a Six Nations weekend. We thank the supporters of both clubs for making that possible.

“Big crowds are a feature of Welford Road, which is why players love playing here, and the supporters make a special atmosphere for every game.”

Tigers this week gained planning consent for the redevelopment of the stadium to accommodate 30,000 supporters, with work scheduled to start on phase one (taking capacity to 23,500) scheduled to start at the end of this season.

Tickets are on sale now for the remaining five league fixtures of the season at Welford Road, starting with the visit from Leeds Carnegie on Saturday, March 1 (kick-off 3pm). Contact the Tigers ticket office on 08701 28 34 30, nook online at the club website or call in at Welford Road.
