Welford Road applauds wheelchair rugby success

Leicester Tigers league-winning wheelchair rugby team received a rapturous reception when they were welcomed to Welford Road at this weekend’s Aviva Premiership win against Wasps.

The team were introduced to the 25,849 crowd ahead of kick-off to celebrate their historic table-topping season, posing for a photo with Tigers first team players Michele Rizzo and Joe Maksymiw.

The squad were crowned champions of the BT Super Series Division One following the final weekend of fixtures at the end of February.

With Leicester successful hosting the Quad Nations tournament in early March, it’s already been a hugely successful year for the club as they prepare for the BT Championships weekend tournament in April.

Since being established in 2014, Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Team is supported by Leicester Tigers Foundation and the Matt Hampson Foundation.

The team train every Friday (12.30pm-3.30pm) at the DeMonfort University Leicester Queen Elizabeth II Leisure Centre.

Anyone interested in training, becoming a player or becoming part of the volunteer staff can contact David Needham on 0784 5809 340 or email [email protected]
