'Welford Road experience is vital for Development XV'

Brett Deacon says the experience of playing in front of a big crowd at Welford Road is invaluable for the young players in the Leicester Tigers development squad.

Tigers host Newcastle Falcons on Sunday in the Premiership A League. It will be the second part of a rugby double header at Welford Road this weekend, following Saturday’s Aviva Premiership clash with Exeter Chiefs.

The Tigers Development XV beat Wasps A 31-20 in an entertaining game under the lights at Welford Road on Monday evening.

And senior development coach Deacon says the chance to run out at the world-famous home of the Tigers is vital for the next generation of players.

“It’s really important for these players to experience playing at Welford Road, in front of big crowds, under the lights,” said Deacon.

“That’s something we are really keen on. The Academy don’t necessarily play here, with playing at Oval Park, so playing at Welford Road is massively important for them and to experience the way we do things.

“It’s treated just like a first-team game. All the stuff is sent out as it would be so it replicates a first-team matchday.

“It would be great to have a big crowd, to have the fans coming down and helping to develop our younger players.”
