Tigers lost 15-12 at Sharks on Friday in the opening action of the Guinness Premiership season, then Quins were beaten 26-15 by London Wasps at Twickenham.
Now both teams will be looking for an opening win when they meet at the Twickenham Stoop on Saturday.
“It is a long season, the season does not live or die on one result,” said Cockerill. “But we need to improve on some things, we will deal with it when we watch the tape again and we will dust ourselves off on Monday and get ready to go to Harlequins next week.”
Sale came out on top on a tryless encounter with five penalties – one from Charlie Hodgson and four from centre Lee Thomas – while Jeremy Staunton kicked four penalties on his Tigers debut at Edgeley Park.
“It wasn’t a great spectacle and the conditions didn’t help,” said Cockerill. “Our discipline wasn’t great but credit to the players, they kept going right to the end and we maybe could have sneaked the win with the pressure we had on their line right at the end of the game.”
Anthony Allen joined Staunton in making his Tigers debut after summer switches to the East Midlands and Cockerill added: “Anthony did some really god things, he carried the ball really well. Staunton kicked well, he got the four penalties, he hit the post with one and he grazed the post with one near the end. It was a new combination and we just have to keep working hard on things.”
