Wells: ‘We’re righting wrongs with hard work’

Fitness training, gym sessions and learning a whole new playbook might not sound like everyone’s idea of summer fun.

But, with the start of the new campaign now well and truly on the horizon, the Leicester Tigers squad are ‘enjoying working really hard for each other’ during the extended pre-season preparations, according to Harry Wells.

“We’re working really well as a group, and our fitness has grown immensely,” he said.

“Our fitness was an area that was addressed at the end of last season, and we need to hold ourselves accountable for that.

“We need to work hard, work together, and everyone’s enjoying doing that.

“Everyone’s enjoying working really hard for each other.”

At 25 years old, the second-rower is already one of the most experienced players in the squad, forming a core of senior players to have come through the Tigers Academy.

And it’s that connection to the club that means the pain of last season still rankles on – and is serving as motivation for the challenges ahead.

“We can’t let [that] happen again,” he said. “We owe the club too much, and it’s got such a rich history, that we need to be accountable for what we did and didn’t do last season.

“We need to start righting those wrongs and start pushing forward, and that’s exactly what we’re doing under Geordie.

“All the coaches have really settled into their roles and everyone’s bringing their own little things. It’s working really well.”

Tigers’ season gets underway on Saturday, September 21 (3.00pm) with a trip to Sixways to face Worcester Warriors in the Premiership Rugby Cup. A home fixture against Exeter Chiefs follows on Friday, September 27 (7.45pm).

The most cost-effective way of catching all the action at Welford Road this season is with a Leicester Tigers season ticket.
