Wheelchair Rugby team back in action

Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby team are back at the Leicester Arena this weekend for the second round of BT Super Series Division One fixtures.

Following their triumph in the first set of fixtures in October, head coach Darren Matthews is anticipating another big weekend, though Tigers will be without Team GB player Nick Cummins.

Matthews said: “We expected to do well last time out because we’d prepared really well and had been training consistently. We still weren’t sure really where we were as a team but it was a great performance.

“With the two teams – Tigers and Marauders – coming together, it’s built a stronger environment for our players with more depth and more competition for spaces. We won’t have Nick with us this week, which is a shame, so it’s a good test for the boys to make sure we get the job done.

“We will be hoping to continue the momentum from our last showing.”

The wheelchair rugby team trains every Friday (11.00am-2.00pm) at the De Montfort University’s QE2 Leisure Centre and welcomes players from all backgrounds and abilities.

Matthews added: “We’ve welcomed some new faces this season and we’ve had players who play at GB Elite level as well as some enjoying their first few sessions with us.”

Action will get under way from 9.00am on Saturday with further games at 12.30pm and 4.00pm. The semi-finals are at  10.45am on Sunday with the Final at 2.00pm.
