Peter Wheeler has been made a Life Member of the Leicester Tigers in recognition of more than 40 years' service with the club.A former captain of club and country, Wheeler retired from the Board of directors at the Annual General Meeting this week.
Director David Abell, chairing the meeting, said: “Peter Wheeler has given the club magnificent service.
“He joined the Tigers as a player in 1969 and went on to make 349 appearances, many of them as captain. He led the team to a John Player Cup hat-trick – and convinced the sponsors to give us the trophy in perpetuity!
“Peter played with distinction at the very highest level, winning 41 caps for England, including a season as captain, and played in seven Tests on two tours with the Lions.
“His role in the development of the club game cannot be overstated, playing a prominent part with the Rugby Football Union, Premiership Rugby, European Rugby and the Professional Game Board, and representing Tigers and the clubs in the most testing negotiations and far-reaching settlements in the history of our sport.
“He becomes a Life Member of the Tigers and we express our huge gratitude to him for his loyal service.”
Wheeler has served the club as player, captain, coach, managing director, president and director.
