Work underway on Welford Road pitch

Work has begun on the Welford Road turf ahead of the new season.

A new pitch, using the Eclipse Turf System and developed by Lincolnshire-based County Turf, was installed at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, using natural turf held together by a stabilising mat.

This artificial membrane keeps the turf tight and compact, reducing the possibility of divots and damage.

As a result, the Welford Road pitch stood up well to the rigours of a nine-month Premiership Rugby season and work has now started on preparing the surface for the return to match action in August.

The stabilising mat remains in place, with the top surface removed to create a clean, free-draining surface for reseeding which will provide another hard-wearing and durable surface ready for kick-off to the new season.

Tigers head groundsman Ed Mowe and his team expect the renovation work to be completed this week, with the shoots of fresh growth to follow in coming weeks.
