Working hard in countdown to opener

Head coach Steve Borthwick says players and staff at Leicester Tigers must “maximise every moment of preparation” with the new season just days away.

Tigers closed the training ground last week after a Covid outbreak, with players training and staff working remotely, but have now safely returned to Oval Park in preparation for the Gallagher Premiership season opener at home to Gloucester Rugby on Saturday.

“The players and staff are working very hard – that didn’t change just because we couldn’t use the training ground,” Borthwick said.

“Players still had things to work on, we’ve still been preparing, and now we’re back on the pitch at Oval Park.

“We’ve just had to adapt. If you can’t control or influence things, then you must choose how to react to it and ensure you maximise everything you can to be in the best possible place to play.”

Richard Wigglesworth and Tito Bonilla are among the additions to the squad since the end of the 2019/20 season and they have been working with Borthwick and assistant coaches Mike Ford and Brett Deacon on the training field. Academy head coach Matt Smith and Academy forwards coach Tom Harrison have also worked with the senior group since the players returned in July for the restart to the 2019/20 season.
