After helping Newcastle Falcons secure their Aviva Premiership survival at the end of last season, the 22-year-old Young had his summer cut short after a call to international duty. Not that he’s complaining.
“I was on holiday when I got a call to say I was needed by England,” says Young whose summer move to Tigers was announced this week.
“I changed my arrangements but I was just glad to be back in the mix. I was shocked when I came back and went straight into the team for the match against the Barbarians. They had a star-studded team and it was a good experience and great to be back in a white shirt.
“Then it was straight from that game in to the Churchill Cup with the Saxons and then I’ll be ready for the start of pre-season at Leicester.
“When the opportunity to go to Leicester came up it was not a hard decision to make really. It is a big club and I k now there are quality players there but it is a challenge I will relish.
“I just want to get into the squad, into the team and get those opportunities.”
Young kicked off his Churchill Cup campaign with one of England’s tries in a record win over the USA last Saturday.
“The boys were great, it is a very enjoyable team to play in,” he says. “The whole team was very clinical and stuck to the gameplan against the USA and I just managed to find a gap for a try.
“We’ve got a lot of speed outside in the backs and it’s a very young squad. Now we’ve got Tonga up next and we’ll be looking forward to it.”
