Young Tigers raring to go for Welford Road experience

Tigers back-rower Will Evans says the squad are ‘mad for it’ ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash with Cardiff Blues in Round 3 of this season’s Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Speaking with LTTV following the Captain’s Run at Welford Road on Friday morning, Evans said the youthful side selected by coach Geordan Murphy were all ready to hit the ground running after being given their chance.

“I’m throughly looking forward to it because I haven’t played in a while,” said Evans.

“We are quietly confident … everybody is mad for it.”

Evans has been named at openside flanker in a forward pack that includes new recruit Facundo Gigena, with the Argentina international set to make his senior team debut after being confirmed as a mid-season signing a week ago.

The loose-head is already making waves among his new team-mates, despite the fact there is a language barrier between him and most of the Tigers squad.

“He’s a very good scrummager, he doesn’t speak too much English but, I’m looking forward to running out with him,” Evans said.

The team was announced earlier today and will be captained by scrum-half Sam Harrison, who this week welcomed his third child, and Evans said the number nine was "saying the right stuff" ahead of the fixture.

“Sammy’s been a breath of fresh-air, he’s not old but he says the right stuff and is good for the young lads.”

Evans will make his seventh appearance of the season on Saturday and admitted that he was nervously excited for the opportunity to run out in front of the Tigers Family at Welford Road.

“When someone gives you the heads-up you’re playing at Welford Road you don’t sleep too much as you’re a bit nervous,” he said.
