They beat Loughborough’s Robert Bakewell Primary School to become the Burleigh Partnership winners in front of a large crowd at the home of two-time European champions Tigers.
Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “There was some exhilarating rugby played in a great spirit. It was a fantastic end to the A&L Tag programme’s Burleigh Partnership.”
Burton on the Wolds overcame Hall Orchard CofE School, from Barrow on Soar, in their semi-final to book a place in the final. Robert Bakewell saw off Newcroft Primary School, from Shepshed, in the other semi-final.
Burton edged a hard-fought final against Robert Bakewell 6-3 to land the title while Newcroft finished third after beating Hall Orchard 3-2 in the third/fourth place play-off.
All of the games were played on the famous Welford Road pitch before Tigers’ Guinness Premiership win over Saracens on Saturday.
Clarke said: “The children took part in four excellent games of rugby. The overall standard of the four teams was exceptional and their discipline and effort was a credit to themselves and their schools.”
Burton on the Wolds now go through to represent the Burleigh Partnership at the end of year finals, which will be held at Welford Road before the Guinness Premiership game against Sale Sharks on Saturday, April 4. They will take on St Clare’s Catholic Primary School, from Coalville, who won the North West Leicestershire Partnership and Leicester’s Richard Hill CofE Primary School, winners of the South Charnwood Partnership.
Tigers’ Alliance and Leicester Tag programme is a three-year rolling programme which sees Tigers deliver tag rugby coaching to every school in Leicestershire and Rutland. So far more than 60,000 children have enjoyed an introduction to rugby through the programme.
