Leicester Tigers have re-signed Ollie Chessum.

The Leicester local, who joined the Tigers squad in the summer of 2020 from Championship club Nottingham Rugby, has made five senior Leicester appearances since debuting in the recommenced 2019/20 campaign.

Capable of playing at lock or in the back row, the 20-year-old scored his debut Tigers try in the club’s Gallagher Premiership win over London Irish at Mattioli Woods Welford Road in Round 12 of the 2020/21 season.

Speaking about the re-signing of Chessum, Leicester Tigers coach Steve Borthwick said: “Ollie is a local Leicester lad who has developed well since joining the squad in the summer from The Championship.

“He has been very committed to the work we have asked of him, on and off the pitch, and this new contract is a reward for the effort he has put in to what we are building at the club.

“Ollie is a hard working player and passionate Tigers clubman, who I am excited about working with and seeing develop in the years to come as a member of the Leicester pack.

Discussing his decision to re-sign with Tigers, Chessum admitted the decision was a “no-brainer” when offered a new deal.

“It was a no-brainer for me. This is the club I grew up watching and I love having this opportunity to be a part of it and play for Leicester Tigers,” said Chessum.

“For me, personally, I don’t think there is anybody better to learn from than Steve and this coaching team he has got here at Tigers.

“My knowledge of my role and my game has improved massively, working with Steve and the players I have got around me in guys like Calum [Green], Harry {Wells] and the rest of the forwards pack.

“The whole squad has a real attachment to the squad, whether you have grown up around Leicester Tigers or come from abroad, we’re all working towards something together and building something here at the club.”

Chessum’s re-signing follows the recommitment to the club from fellow youngsters James Whitcombe and Dan Kelly.
