Lightning almost strikes twice for Bateman

Lightning almost struck twice for Greg Bateman when he charged through a gap in the Harlequins defence in Saturday’s 33-18 win at Welford Road.

His run during the first-half brought back memories of his brilliant try in the first meeting of the two teams at the Twickenham Stoop in September.

Back then, front-rower  Bateman ran on to George Ford’s pass and rounded Mike Brown before scoring next to the posts.

On this occasion, Matt Toomua put him through the gap but he was eventually stopped by last-man Jono Kitto just as Welford Road thought the prop was away to score again.

Bateman was asked about his run during his post-match duties, and he responded in typically humorous style.

“Our attacking shape relies on good ball players like Matt Toomua to put you into decent positions,” said Bateman. “I was fortunate enough to have the natural pace to break the line!”
