Loan players add to senior experience

Leicester Tigers have a group of development squad players in first-team action with clubs at Championship and National League level this weekend.

Wales Under-20s fly-half Sam Costelow retains his place in the starting line-up for Ampthill as they go to Cornish Pirates in the Championship.

Summer signing Joe Thomas is given a starting spot in the Nottingham backline as they face Jersey Reds on Saturday. Kyran Bungaroo retains his place on the wing while club colleagues Cameron Jordan, Sam Lewis and Johnny McPhillips are named among the replacements.

Nottingham head coach Neil Fowkes said: “Joe Thomas comes in at outside centre and Harry Strong moves to the bench after having a lot of game time and we feel a bit of a freshen-up in midfield is needed this week. Joe has come in from Leicester and has done well off the bench against Pirates last week.”

Yorkshire Carnegie director of rugby Martyn Wood and head coach Joe Ford include Tigers back-rowers Taylor Gough and Thom Smith in the starting pack for Sunday’s home game against Ealing Trailfinders. Henri Lavin is on the bench.

At National League level, Tigers academy graduates Ollie Ashworth and Leo Gilliland have been gaining senior experience with Scott Hamilton’s Hinckley who go to Wharfedale this weekend.

England age-group caps Joe Browning, Freddie Steward and Jonny Law played in the BUCS League with Loughborough University this week, while the Students send a team to Fylde in National Two North on Saturday.

Leicester Lions – who have included Tigers trio James WhitcombeGeorge Martin and Sam Eveleigh this season – are at Sutton & Epsom on Saturday in National Two South.
