Reaction | Deacon on away win in Cup

Brett Deacon gave credit to the Leicester Tigers squad for sticking to their gameplan in victory over Saracens in the Premiership Rugby Cup on Saturday.

“I thought it was a really strong performance,” said assistant coach Deacon, who had led the Tigers team during this tournament, following the 45-8 win over a young Saracens team.

“It was challenging in the first half against the wind, which did affect our exits. Saracens played a lot of phases in our half and the boys had to fight for each other, and I thought we did that

“We had a very strong partnership in the second row with Cam Henderson and Eli Snyman, and we thought we could challenge in that lineout area. It’s easy to have a plan to do that, but the guys have to execute it and I thought they did that really well.”

Sean Jansen and Tom Horton both scored doubles, to go alongside tries from Henderson, Francois van Wyk and Marcus Ramage to seal a second victory in the pool stages to go alongside narrow defeats by Newcastle and Sale Sharks.

“We need to learn from it and get better,” added Deacon. “If we’d beaten Newcastle at home, we were probably through. So there is definitely something to learn. I learned a lot from that game, but I couldn’t be prouder of the boys for the way they went at it today.”
