Round 19 Reaction: Julián Montoya

Julián Montoya was high in praise for his Leicester Tigers teammates following the bonus-point win over Bath Rugby at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

The front-rower scored twice in the 48-27 victory in Round 19 of the 2022/23 Gallagher Premiership season, a third successive league win for Tigers, but wasn’t interested in discussing his own display following the match.

“No, I never really score out wide like that so it was a bit different but very happy to get across and score those tries for the team,” Montoya said.

“I just finished them today, that was all the work from players on the inside making the chances for me.”

Discussing the match, Montoya added: “It was a big win for us. Every game we play is important, every game I get to play alongside these players is important to me."

“I’m very happy with the performance today.

“The last couple of games we have started really well but then got ourselves in a bit of loop and that is going to happen, no game is perfect.

“We can’t expect perfect performances any week but, today, we got out of the loop and back on track to finish the game well."

The Leicester hooker, who has skippered the matchday squad in recent weeks, paid tribute to the entire squad for their efforts in ensuring the side representing the group on the weekend were prepared properly come game day.

“We are working really hard in the week,” he said.

“Making what we do in the week work on the pitch on the weekend is the most important thing. There is still a lot we can be better at and that excites us, so we get back to it next week together to prepare well for the next game.

“The bench were outstanding today in the way they came on and added energy, it was very important to getting us the win.

“It is not just the bench either; we have 30 or so players who are training hard together and that is what prepares us well to come out and perform well.

“There is more than just 23 players contributing at the moment and we need that. You don’t see them on the weekend, but they are working just as hard if not harder to prepare the team every week.”

Leicester Tigers travel to Gloucester next weekend in Round 20, the final away game for the side in this season’s league campaign, and Montoya said the Sunday afternoon fixture at Kingsholm was the only focus for he and his teammates.

“The focus is only the next game, ever, and it won’t change,” said Montoya.

“We have to focus on what we can improve and not look any further than the next game.

“Now, we enjoy this result because we worked hard for it and then after that we come back in to training and get ready to go to Gloucester.”
