Smith & Crane in reduced Saxons squad

Figure image
Tigers centre Ollie Smith and No.8 Jordan Crane have been named in a reduced 23-man England Saxons squad ahead of the match against Italy A on Friday February 2.

Smith wasn't originally named in the earlier party announced at the beginning of the month, but his impressive form since returning from injury has prompted his inclusion.

Crane, on the other hand, was included in that earlier squad, having already represnted England at U-18, U-19 and U-21 level.

"This is a very exciting England Saxons squad," said head coach Jim Mallinder. "I think we've found a good blend of experience and young talent. Every player has been selected on form and all have been playing well for their clubs in the Guinness Premiership.

"We've had to make several additions to the training squad announced on January 2. Northampton prop Pat Barnard has been in excellent form for the Saints so comes in, in place of the injured David Wilson. Will Skinner and Ollie Smith also join us and we're lucky to have Alex Brown and Shaun Perry from the senior squad."

One of the most notable omissions is Saracens' Richard Hill.

"Having discussed things with his club, Brian Ashton and I have decided that, for the moment, Richard will stay with Saracens to take some more time to recover," said Mallinder.

The squad meets up in Exeter on Sunday, with the starting line up due to be announced by Wednesday January 31.
