Jack van Poortvliet has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup after sustaining an ankle injury in England's victory over Wales on Saturday (August 12) at Twickenham.

The Leicester Tigers scrum-half requires surgery and will not return in time to feature at the World Cup after being named as part of the England squad by Head Coach Steve Borthwick last week alongside five of his club mates.

Northampton Saints scrum-half Alex Mitchell is called into the England squad as his replacement.

Speaking about the injury, Borthwick said: “It’s really bad luck for Jack, and we send him our very best wishes for a swift and successful recovery.”
