Thanksgiving Service in memory of legend David

A Thanksgiving Service and Celebration of the life of Leicester Tigers history-maker David Matthews will be held in Rutland on Monday (July 15) and will be open to anyone wishing to pay their respects.

Tigers’ record appearance holder, David’s links with the club stretched to nearly 65 years as player, coach, president, director and life member before he passed away on June 18, aged 82.

There is a Thanksgiving Service open to anyone who knew David or wishing to pay their respects at St Nicholas’ Church, Cottesmore in Rutland (post code LE15 7DH) at 2.00pm on Monday.

Extra parking has been allocated behind Cottesmore Sports and Social Club (LE15 7DJ, behind The Sun Inn) nearby and a drop-off point will be available outside the church.

The service will be followed by a Celebration of David’s life hosted at Oakham Rugby Club, Oakham Showground (LE15 7TW). Everyone is welcome.

At the request of the family, no flowers please. Donations in David’s memory can be made to the Matt Hampson Foundation or Parkinsons UK.

The club has opened an online condolences book where supporters can add their own comments before these are collated and passed on to the Matthews family as a gift from those who knew and loved David the Tiger.

A summary of the book will also be published via the club's online channels as we continue to remember and honour David’s memory.
