TIGERS CLASSIC | 1979 John Player Cup Final

Supporters can enjoy one of the club's most famous victories, the 1979 John Player Cup Final win over Moseley at Twickenham, in this week's Tigers Classic on Saturday (April 25) afternoon on LTTV.

Following recent re-lived classics including the 2001 Heineken Cup win over Stade Francais, 1993 record-breaking victory over the Barbarians at Welford Road and 1997 European semi-final against Toulouse, we have dug further in to the LTTV Archive to pick out the Cup Final against Moseley.

The first of a history-making three consecutive Cup wins for Tigers, the 1979 win included Leicester legends Peter Wheeler, Dusty Hare, Paul Dodge, Les Cusworth, Ian 'Dosser' Smith, Steve Kenney

Coached by Chalkie White, the Tigers side came from behind to defeat Moseley in the decider at HQ in front of 18,000 fans on the famous day for the club.

KEY STATS

The battle of the No.10s is a mouth-watering meeting for supporters to look forward to on Saturday, with Handré Pollard and Finn Russell having faced off for both club and country over a number of years.

Like their clubs, the pair sit first and second on the points-scorers tally in the current campaign with only 14 points separating them after 16 Rounds of Gallagher Premiership action. Russell is top with 148 and Pollard, who scored 19 points in last week's win over Sale Sharks, is narrowly behind with 134 points.

The last two meetings between the clubs at The Rec have been decided by just one point.

In the 23/24 campaign it was Tigers who came away 24-25 winners thanks a last-gasp penalty goal from Jamie Shillcock, while in the 22/23 campaign it was the home side who scored a late try to win 19-18.
