Tigers wheelchair rugby team aim for double

Leicester Tigers league-winning wheelchair rugby team are back in action this weekend as they hope to secure a league and cup double for the first time in the club’s history.

Crowned as BT Super Series Division One champions in February earlier this year, the Roma Sports National Championships sees the division’s top six teams battle it out in the National Cup.

London Storm, West Coast Crash, London Crusaders, Team Solent Sharks, Canterbury Hellfire make up the opposition at Medway Park, Kent as Tigers look to stop holders London Storm from winning a fifth straight national title.

Tigers will take on Storm and Canterbury in the group stages of Pool 1 on Saturday (April 21) meeting the winners of Pool 2 on the Sunday (April 22) for the semi-final and final matches.

Darren Matthews, coach of the Leicester Tigers wheelchair rugby team, said: “Our preparations continued as normal straight after our final league fixture. The gap has been short so we hope to reinforce our style of play this weekend.

“We just need to continue our form and if we do that we will be in a good position to perform at our best.”

Players and staff from the team were invited onto the Welford Road pitch when Tigers beat Wasps in the Aviva Premiership in March as the club recognised their league-winning success.

Rob Tarr, chairman of the Leicester Tigers wheelchair rugby team, added:

After our recent warm welcome and celebration at Welford Road, the team is even more hungry to bring home another trophy for the stadium cabinet”.

“The National Cup is the ultimate prize at the end of our season and the boys will be going all out to take the title”

The action starts from 9.00am on the Saturday and concludes with Sunday’s final which starts at 1.45pm. Keep an eye on Tigers social media channels for all the latest updates.

New club partner Häfele will also be cheering on the team, as the club announced earlier this week that the German furniture fittings and architectural hardware specialist will be the official sponsor of the wheelchair rugby team from the start of next season.
