Toomua pleased by Tigers' fighting spirit

Matt Toomua praised the fight in the Leicester Tigers squad after the 33-18 Aviva Premiership win over Harlequins.

Tigers scored three second-half tries through Toomua, Graham Kitchener and Adam Thompstone to come from behind at half-time and secure the victory at Welford Road. Scroll down to watch the highlights on LTTV.

Toomua was voted the Spire Man of the Match by supporters for his performance at fly-half. The Australia international kicked three conversions and four penalties, as well as his try, in a personal haul of 23 points.

But Toomua, who was also named the Aviva Man of the Match by the BT Sport commentary team, was quick to acclaim the efforts of his team-mates.

“Could this be a turning point? Let’s hope so,” he said. “It’s one of those games which was a little bit indicative of our season. We did a lot of good things and some poor things as well.

“The key was that we fought through those periods. We showed a lot of fight. We managed the momentum at times and gave it back to them.”

Toomua made his first appearance for the club at fly-half and admitted it took a little time to settle into the role.

“I haven’t worn the number 10 jersey since about 2015,” he said. “It’s not ages agi but it’s been a little while. I had to get used to it and I did sit in the wrong place in the changing rooms initially!

“I haven’t been the main goal-kicker in my professional career, probably since U20s. That took a bit of getting used to. I was a little bit shaky at the start but I’m glad I managed to hit them okay at the end.

“The first one I nudged the goal-post, which is annoying. It’s one of those things, you have to stick at it and hopefully it evens up by the end there, which it did.”
