Wiese backs 'the boys' after opening Euro win

Jasper Wiese credited the 23-man squad with getting Leicester Tigers off to a winning start in the European Challenge Cup on Friday evening.

Two late tries ensured a bonus-point win over Brive at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, with Wiese voted EPCR Man of the Match for another impressive performance in the back row.

“I think the guys starting did really well and wore them down in the first 40 minutes,” said Wiese who started training with Tigers just a few days before making his debut in the season-opening win over Gloucester last month.

“Then the guys came off the bench and made a great impact and finished it well.

“Everybody is right into the plan. You can have the plan, but if the boys don’t buy into it, you’re going nowhere.”

Head coach Steve Borthwick, assessing Wiese’s impact so far, said: “Jasper is an excellent ball-carrier but you can’t forget the other aspects of his game in set-piece and in defence. He has added a lot to the squad, he trains very hard every day and sets an example, it’s good to have him here.”
