Worth recommits to Leicester Tigers

George Worth has recommitted to Leicester Tigers with the Tigers Academy graduate extending his contract with the club.

The versatile outside-back joined the club as 16-year-old and has spent seven seasons at Tigers, making his 50th senior appearance for Leicester in last weekend’s Gallagher Premiership fixture at Twickenham.

"We are not where we want to be as a club and to leave now, would be a failure on my part"

Worth made his senior debut in the 2015/16 season in a Premiership game against Bath and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign during the 2016/17 season with senior appearances in the Premiership, European Champions Cup and the successful Anglo-Welsh Cup run.

So far, during the 2019/20 campaign, Worth has made more appearances (14) than any other member of the Tigers squad and says he doesn’t want the opportunity represent Leicester “to stop”.

“I’ve invested a lot into the club since I was 16,” said Worth.

“When I was 16 I wanted to play for the first team, which I have had opportunities to do, and I don’t want that to stop.”

The club-man also admits to feeling a “responsibility” to being part of the rebuild in Leicester and commitment to seeing Tigers back to the top.

“We are not where we want to be as a club, and to leave now, would be a failure on my part,” he said.

“I came here when we were successful and to leave now, would be something I would regret looking back on.

“A lot has gone on at the club over the past few years and now, with the stability that has taken place in coaches and the playing group, it seems to me that with that stability, I have a responsibility to be a part of trying to put things right.”

Speaking about Worth’s re-signing, Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy paid tribute to the versatility of the Academy product.

“George came through the Academy and has been hugely versatile for us,” he said.

“There were a lot of clubs who would want a guy like George on their books, so that he wants to stay here is great for us.”

Murphy also pointed towards the “team man” and leadership qualities of Worth to the squad.

“He’s a great team man and a great leader … he is incredibly mature and we are delighted that George is remaining at Tigers,” said Murphy.

“What we’re all about is having good people around us, especially in tough times, and George is just that.

“He wants to be here, wants to work hard and be a part of getting us back on the right path.”

Worth’s recommitment to the club follows the re-signing of fellow outside-back Sam Aspland-Robinson earlier today.
