Gibson eager to learn

New arrival Jamie Gibson says the chance to learn from Tigers' experienced back rowers was one of the things that drew him to Leicester.

Gibson says he can only learn from working with the likes of Tom Croft, who played in two Tests for the British & Irish Lions in the summer, Supporters’ Player of the Year Julian Salvi and internationals Jordan Crane, Steve Mafi and Thomas Waldrom.

And the back rower admits that he is already adding to his game before the pre-season games have even started.

England Saxon Gibson, 22, says: “Working here with the likes of Julian Salvi, Tom Croft and the back row boys who have been there and done it, it was a big draw for me to have a chance to learn directly from them.

“It’s the little things that, as you start training, you pick up from watching people and talking to them and when you look back you wonder how you missed that before. It seemed so easy.

“Over the next three or four weeks, as the pre-season games start, that will really pick up.”

Gibson played for England in two midweek games on their tour to South Africa in 2012 after being called up as an injury replacement.

And he hopes that working in the Tigers environment can help him take the next step to a Test cap.

He says: “One of the big draws, especially as a forward, is that if you can play successfully for Leicester Tigers then there’s the chance you could go on and play for England.

“To take the next step, to push on, this is the place to be and that is one of my goals.”
