Report | Tigers beat Bath with bonus-point

Figure image

Leicester Tigers defeated Bath Rugby 48-27 to record a bonus-point win over Bath Rugby at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday afternoon.

The home side scored six tries in the 21-point victory, including a brace for Julián Montoya, to make it three straight in the Gallagher Premiership.

Harry Potter, Hanro Liebenberg, Harry Wells and Handré Pollard were Leicester's other try-scorers, with the latter finishing with a personal haul of 21-points after adding sixteen from the tee.

Charlie Atkinson, who replaced Pollard in the second-half, added two with a lone conversion late in the match.

The win, following narrow defeats of Saracens and London Irish in the past fortnight, is the first time Tigers have recorded three successive victories so far this Premiership season and is the side's first four-try bonus-point win since the European away win over ASM Clermont Auvergne in January.

TRY | BATH RUGBY

Fergus Lee-Warner drives over for the away side

CONVERSION | CHARLIE ATKINSON

The left-footer slots the close-range kick

The second-row runs it home to a standing ovation. Harry Simmons does brilliantly to keep it alive and he combines with Mike Brown to exploit broken play and put a rampaging Wells through into space to jog over

SUBSTITUTIONS | LEICESTER TIGERS

Both half-backs Youngs and Pollard are replaced, as is hooker Montoya. In their place come Whiteley, Atkinson and Clare respectively

68

DISALLOWED TRY

With the bit between their teeth, the Tigers hunt for more. A grubber through from Potter, then a spill from a covering Niall Annett allows the wing to dot down but it's chalked off after it's decided there was a Tigers push

CONVERSION | Handré Pollard

Handré Pollard slots a booming nudge over from way out left

TRY | Julián Montoya

Mattioli Woods Welford Road erupts as Mike Brown flies through from the Tigers half, the tackles falling off him but he's hauled down agonisingly short. Tigers keep their composure amidst the bedlam and fire it wide to hooker turned left-winger Julián Montoya who fends off Bath's winger and finish a fantastic try

Juan Schoeman comes on in place of Beno Obano

59

SUBSTITUTIONS | BOTH SIDES

Again, another set of replacements for both sides.

Firstly, Tommy Reffell and Joe Heyes, are replaced by Harry Wells and Will Hurd respectively. For the away side, Louis Schreuder comes on for Ruaridh McConnochie

HALF-TIME

Tigers lead at the break to the tune of 31 - 13. Tries from Harry Potter, Handré Pollard, Julián Montoya and Hanro Liebenberg are joined by a full house of conversions and a penalty from the home side

CONVERSION | Handré Pollard

A simple kick from right in front of the posts, executed perfectly

TRY | HANRO LIEBENBERG

The back-row shows great industry to drive over from short-range, right on the stroke of half-time

SUBSTITUTION | BATH RUGBY

Enforced substitution for a blood injury sees Jaco Coetzee leave the field for a debuting Alfie Barbeary

36

CONVERSION MISSED | BATH RUGBY

Spencer can't convert his own try, however, so an 11 point lead remains

TRY | BATH RUGBY

Ben Spencer cannily spots the ball spilling out of a ruck and has open field to run over in the left corner

PENALTY | Handré Pollard

A beauty, 40 metres out and the fly-half sends it sailing through the posts

PENALTY | BEN SPENCER

Scrum-half Ben Spencer stems the Tigers tide with a confident kick

CONVERSION | Handré Pollard

Another lovely nudge from Pollard as Tigers go further ahead

TRY | Julián Montoya

The hooker scores his 18th try for the club, jogging over from around 10 metres out as Tigers take advantage of the overload in numbers

YELLOW CARD | BATH RUGBY

Amongst the fracas, Bath are shown a second yellow card to their pack, this time to second-row Josh McNally

CONVERSION | Handré Pollard

The South African international adds the extras to his own score

TRY | Handré Pollard

Instrumental in the first, scores the second. Tigers go agonisingly  close through neat footwork from Mike Brown but a phase later there's still space and Pollard runs it home

YELLOW CARD | BATH RUGBY

The away side are down to 14 after a cynical infringement from hooker Tom Dunn

CONVERSION | Handré Pollard

Handré Pollard adds the extras and Tigers pull in front by two points

TRY | HARRY POTTER

Déjà vu all over again as this time a Tigers line-out allows for huge carries from the pack. After drawing in several defenders, Tigers go wide courtesy of a beautiful floating miss pass from Pollard, onto Potter who has clear space to run it in.

10

CONVERSION MISSED | BATH RUGBY

Ben Spencer misses the opportunity to extend Bath's lead with a kick from the corner.

TRY | BATH RUGBY

Bath win the penalty and then the line-out in Tigers 22. After a succession of hard carries from the forwards, they ship it wide and Matt Gallagher touches down

Team News | Leicester side to play Bath

Figure image

Richard Wigglesworth has named the Leicester Tigers matchday squad to play Bath Rugby in Round 19 of the 2022/23 Gallagher Premiership.

Julián Montoya will captain the team at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday afternoon.

Wigglesworth has made two changes to the starting side which recorded back-to-back victories in the club’s past fortnight of fixtures.

In the pack, Tommy Reffell returns from international duty for Wales to start in the back-row alongside Hanro Liebenberg and Jasper Wiese.

Meanwhile, in the back three, Harry Simmons is included on one wing in place of Chris Ashton with Mike Brown and Harry Potter retaining their places.

There are two changes to the bench with Olly Cracknell, who started last weekend’s win, taking the place of Emeka Ilione and Guy Porter takes the place of Simmons.

If used, Porter will make his first appearance in five weeks.
