Schools enjoy summer tag festival with The Nottingham

Year 3 and 4 pupils from four Leicestershire schools took part in the latest Tag Rugby festival last week hosted by Leicester Tigers and club partner The Nottingham Building Society.

Now in its third year, the Tag Rugby programme has seen Tigers deliver coaching to more than 3,000 pupils at around 90 schools in and around Leicestershire.

The programme offers tag rugby coaching during PE lessons across a five-week period before each school is invited to take part in their first competitive tournament.

Groups from Elizabeth Woodville Primary School in Groby, Glenfield Primary School, Newtown Lindford Primary School and Leicester's Stokes Wood Primary School joined Tigers coaches on Friday at Birstall Rugby Club to play in a round-robin tournament. Youngsters also got the chance to meet club mascot Welford before receiving a t-shirt for taking part.

Phoebe Badelek, aged 9, from Elizabeth Woodville Primary School, was also picked as The Nottingham 'Magic Moments' winner due to her positive attitude and demonstrating the rugby values.

Pete Talbot, Tigers rugby development officer, who runs the programme, said: “It was brilliant to see the teams in action putting everything they’ve learnt over the past few weeks into practice."

We’re looking forward to our final tag rugby festival of this school year over in Melton and have already started planning how we can reach even more kids next year.”
