The opening weekend of the 2023 Guinness Six Nations returned defeats for Leicester Tigers involved for their respective nations.

In the tournament opener, Tigers back-rower Tommy Reffell came off the bench for Wales in their 24-point, 10-34 loss to Ireland in Cardiff.

Reffell was brought on in the second half, in which both sides scored just seven points, for his Six Nations debut.

Meanwhile, later in the day at Twickenham, six Tigers were in action for England in their showdown with Scotland.

The hosts took a 13-12 lead into the break but were unable to hold on and went down to the Scots by six points, 23-29, to come away with just the lone competition point.

Ollie Chessum, Jack van Poortvliet and Freddie Steward started for England, while Dan Cole, Ben Youngs and Anthony Watson were used as replacements.

A five-point defeat for Italy at home to France in the final fixture of Round 1 saw them also claim a losing bonus-point which means only Wales completed the opening weekend without any points on the table.
