Success for England tourists down under

Tryscorer Freddie Steward says it is “an amazing experience” to share in a series win with England in Australia.

Leicester Tigers full-back Steward scored one of the tries in a 21-17 victory in Sydney on Saturday which clinched a 2-1 series victory for England.

His club colleagues Guy Porter, Ellis Genge and Ollie Chessum also started the decisive third Test, with Joe Heyes and Jack van Poortvliet used from the bench.

Both centre Porter and scrum-half van Poortvliet both made their Test debuts in the series, while Chessum started for the first time in Saturday’s encounter.

“The boys just fought, dug in and gave everything,” said Steward.

“To win after an effort like that in a proper Test match is special.

“To come away with a series win is amazing. We've given everything. To give a performance like that at the back end of a season is awesome."

England were losing 10-3 before Steward stretched out to score the tourists’ first try at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Marcus Smith added the second after half-time on the way to just a second series win in Australia.
