Steve Borthwick has named the Leicester Tigers squad to face Newcastle Falcons at Mattioli Woods Welford Road in the European Challenge Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

Richard Wigglesworth will captain the side, returning to the starting line-up alongside Johnny McPhillips as the Leicester half-backs.

Matt Scott and Matías Moroni are included in an unchanged Tigers midfield, with Freddie Steward, Kini Murimurivalu and Harry Potter named in the Leicester back three.

In the only change to the Tigers tight-five, Harry Wells starts alongside Cameron Henderson at lock, and Luan de Bruin, Charlie Clare and Joe Heyes retain their places in the front row.

Hanro Liebenberg is at No8, with Tigers Academy graduates Tommy Reffell and George Martin included as the flankers.

An all-international trio of Tom Youngs, Ellis Genge and Dan Cole are among the replacements, with Tomás Lavanini and Jasper Wiese named as the other forwards on the bench.

Jack Van Poortvliet, George Ford and Dan Kelly are the backs replacements.

If he is used from the bench, Ford will make his 100th appearance for Leicester Tigers.

“They have had a very good season so far in Europe and the Premiership and we know they, coming off the back of a big away win in Wales, will be hungry to continue their good form this weekend.”

Previewing Saturday night’s fixture, Borthwick said: “We know the challenge Newcastle will present and must be prepared for a tough fixture on Saturday afternoon.”

“They are a talented squad, with threats throughout their team, and are a well-coached club, who have shown what they are capable of in this season so far with some very good results, home and away, in both competitions.

“They have had a very good season so far in Europe and the Premiership and we know they, coming off the back of a big away win in Wales, will be hungry to continue their good form this weekend.”

Speaking about the matchday squad named, the Tigers head coach Steve Borthwick added: “The team picked every week is one we believe is capable of going out and winning the game.”

“We want to build more competition for places in this side and reward players who have earned their place with the opportunity to represent Leicester Tigers.

“This team is expected, like every Tigers team, to go out and deliver a performance which our supporters will be proud of on Saturday afternoon.”
