The charity contest – supporting the Matt Hampson Trust, Richard Engelgardt, LOROS and youth cricket at Rothley Park CC – provided entertainment and big names worthy of the occasion, 10 years after Leicester Tigers first played the fixture against an all-star XI.
Leicestershire CCC captain Matthew Hoggard led the All-Stars, with county cricketers Paul Nixon, James Taylor, Claude Henderson and Darren Maddy among his team-mates, plus footballers Matt Elliott, Gerry Taggart and Scott Oakes, and Tigers legends Freddie Tuilagi and Leon Lloyd.
Matt Hampson and Richard Engelgardt were among a large and appreciative crowd in glorious sunshine as Hoggard set the tone for the afternoon supplying some mighty blows over the boundary ropes - and the surrounding trees.
But Newby wasted no time in leading the Tigers run-chase, with the opener collecting 50 of the first 70 runs on the board.
The New Zealander, who made his debut in the event last year, threatened not just the crowd but also parts of the Leicestershire countryside with his big hits before retiring unbeaten on 102.
With encouragement from the sidelines from colleagues Geordan Murphy, Geoff Parling, Rob Hawkins, Ben Woods and director of rugby Richard Cockerill, and with the last pair at the wicket, it was fitting that Tigers skipper Harry Ellis should score the final boundary.
The Tigers squad also included Jordan Crane, Richard Blaze, Manu Tuilagi, Mitch Reed, James Grindal, Dan Hipkiss, Thomas Waldrom, George Chuter, Tom Croft and Martin Castrogiovanni.
