Saxons hope for passionate support

England Saxons line up against Ireland A at Welford Road on Friday, February 1, with the players involved hoping to experience the kind of atmosphere traditionally associated with Leicester Tigers.

“Playing in front of your home crowd wearing an England shirt is a massive honour for any player,” says Tigers lock Richard Blaze.

“We’ve got five players in the squad from Leicester and it is going to be a massive occasion.”

The young second-row forward is among five Tigers players named in the original Saxons squad, giving them the opportunity of gaining international recognition on their home ground.

That would be a fascinating experience, but it is also one that the 22-year-old Blaze has come through once before.

“I played for England U-21s at Worcester when I was a Worcester player and that was one of the most memorable games of my career so far,” said Blaze, who moved to Tigers in the summer and is seen as one of the top up-and-coming locks in the English game.

“The crowd was great and I am sure it will be the same if I have the opportunity to play in front of our home crowd at Welford Road.”

Blaze is joined by teammates Tom Varndell, Dan Hipkiss, Ollie Smith and Jordan Crane in a young and exciting Saxons squad.
