That is the view of Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE ahead of the northern leg of the JP Morgan Asset Management Premiership Sevens series at Welford Road on Friday evening.
Tom, who is also chairman of Aviva Premiership Rugby, said: “Sevens has been a part of the rugby calendar for many years but there has been increased coverage and interest in recent seasons, especially now that this version of the sport has been accepted as an Olympic event for 2016.
“Having rugby recognised in the Olympic Games is a massive step for the game as a whole in terms of appealing to a worldwide audience.
“Sevens has a major appeal with exciting quick-fire contests and this is also an opportunity for players to develop their game in a competitive arena.”
The new sevens series provides an opportunity to see some exciting, running rugby in quick-fire contests in top-class venues as Leicester Tigers lock horns with Leeds Carnegie, Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks on Friday. The top two will progress to the finals later this summer. Saracens and Harlequins booked their places in the finals after coming through the southern tournament last weekend, with the south-west section scheduled for July 30.
Tom added: “We see this series as a great way for supporters of all ages to enjoy a summer evening of rugby at Premiership venues across the country.
“From a Leicester Tigers point of view, we have seen the likes of Tom Croft and Ben Youngs make a big impression in the Sevens format on their way to establishing themselves in the senior squad and gaining international recognition.
“I’m sure there will be an opportunity for other young players to make their mark in the series this summer.”
