Students launch varsity campaign in style

On Sunday February 11, students from De Montfort University and the University of Leicester launched their varsity campaign by competing against each other in a half-time tug-o-war at the Tigers vs Argentina match here at Welford Road.

Students from the men's and women's rugby teams at both universities were represented in the half-time contest which saw the University of Leicester winning two out of the three contests. During the third contest, De Montfort students decided that entertaining the crowd was more important than winning and, on the count of three, they let go of their end of the rope leading to all eight University of Leicester students ending up on their rear ends!

tug-o-warAs usual, everything was taken in jest and the two teams were all smiles as they enjoyed a pitch-side photo before returning to watch the second half of the match.

Tickets for the annual rugby varsity matches taking place on March 9 are on sale now from the Tigers ticket office on 08701 28 34 30.
The women's teams will be kicking off at 6pm with the men's match following at 7.45pm.

This will be the fifth year the event has been held at Welford Road and everyone is looking forward to what is always a unique night. Before, during and after the two matches, there is a whole array of ancillary entertainment including mascot races, cheerleaders, beer boat races and sometimes even the odd streaker!

Although there is always a fun and jovial atmosphere among the crowd, the atmosphere within the four teams is anything but relaxed. Each of the 88 players taking part have only one thing on their minds, and that is beating their old rivals and winning the varsity trophy.

With thousands of students turning out to support their respective teams, the Crumbie stand is alive with songs and banter flying between the two camps.

To purchase your ticket call the ticket office on 08701 28 34 30.

Tickets cost £4 in advance or £6 on the night.
