Tigers look forward to 'A' League Final

Coach Paul Burke says a good balance of youth and experience has taken Leicester Tigers Development XV into Monday's final of the Premier Rugby 'A' League.

Tigers topped the northern conference with seven wins from 10 games, then beat Saracens in the semi-final to set up a final showdown on home soil against Harlequins this Monday evening (7pm).

A big crowd is expected for the first domestic final of the season, and Tigers coach Burke said: “I’m really delighted with all the guys all year. We’ve put a real emphasis on the A side and it has paid dividends.

“We’ve got a very well established Academy set-up, with some good young players coming through. The ‘A’ team gives them time to step out of the Academy and rub shoulders with senior guys and represent the club at Welford Road. They will become better players from playing in those games.

“For guys like George Ford to play alongside Harry Ellis and Sam Vesty is a really good experience for him. For Ryan Bower, Jimmy Stevens and the forwards to have Julian White in the same changing room, giving them encouragement, has been fantastic.

“We’ve had young players come in and out of the team, and every time they have put on the jersey they have performed.”

A Saracens team containing established Premiership players Richard Haughton, Kameli Ratuvou, Noah Cato and Moses Rauluni was beaten 23-11 in the semi-final stage, but Burke says there is no chance of anyone resting on their laurels ahead of Monday’s final.

“Saracens came with a strong side last week, they took the game to another level for the semi-final, but we’ll have to step up again for the final” Burke said.

“It is going to be difficult in the final because Quins have a good squad too, but it is a final and you expect that. It will be a challenge for us to take on.

“The boys have worked tirelessly all season to get to the final and it’ll be great to get a big crowd in to cheer them on.”
