Tigers stars 'Grow a Mo for Hambo'

Tigers' five-try demolition of Cardiff Blues may have been the major talking point at Welford Road last weekend, but the prominence of an unprecedented degree of facial hair cannot have been too far behind.

A number of Tigers players sported beards and moustaches of various descriptions, with their efforts ranging from straightforward ‘taches and goatees to extravagant handlebars and mutton chops.

The reason for the display was simple – to raise funds and awareness for the Matt Hampson Trust and spinal research.

“It’s a great cause,” says Tigers full back Geordan Murphy. “All the lads are keen to get involved so the look will hopefully last for the full month. Matt’s a fantastic individual and everyone here at Tigers wants to do whatever we can to help.”

Players and staff at the club intend to spend the month of November showing off their facial efforts, bringing publicity to Matt’s trust as a result. 'Grow a Mo for Hambo’ is also reaching far wider than Leicester Tigers, with as many Guinness Premiership players as possible being encouraged to participate.

The sight of two Premiership teams going head-to-head with ridiculous handlebars or Zapatas is certain to gain a fair bit of attention, but the general public are also being encouraged to join in with the facial hair festivities. This means you or your friends or family can attempt to outdo George Chuter’s mighty beard or Geordan Murphy’s copper-coloured concoction.

Supporters can send their pics to [email protected] with the best efforts set to feature in future Tigers matchday programmes. You can also send your pics to [email protected] to get your efforts posted on Matt’s official website at www.matthampson.co.uk

To make things as simple as possible, the concept will be self-sponsored and a minimum donation of £5 will be made to the Matt Hampson Trust. That doesn’t mean you can’t collect money from friends for your efforts – it just means you don’t have to in order take part. All you need to do is visit the www.matthampson.co.uk and follow the link. You will not be required to fill in personal information or add contact details unless you wish to do so.
