Tigers support city's World Cup double bid

Leicester Tigers have added their backing to the city's bid to become a FIFA World Cup host - and provide a memorable international double.

Welford Road, home of the Guinness Premiership champions, has already been included in the Rugby Football Union’s proposals to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and Tigers are also supporting a bid to host football’s equivalent in 2018.

Tigers managing director David Clayton said: “We would be delighted if Leicester was successful in its bid for 2018 and we are exploring if it would be possible for visiting football squads to use any of our facilities in their preparations for World Cup fixtures.

“This is a great sporting county and it would be a major achievement for the city to host World Cup events in rugby and football in the space of just a few years.”

Jordan Crane, the Tigers and England No8, is a football fan and offered his backing to the bid this week.

“It would be brilliant to bring the World Cup to Leicester,” he said. “We’ve got the facilities and we’ve got the fans, which is why I think Leicester would make a great World Cup city.”

Welford Road and Tigers’ training facilities at Oadby have been included in Leicester’s outline bid, which was delivered to the England 2018 bid team this week.
