Youngsters star in Prima Tiger Cup

Youngsters from Burton and Stratford rugby clubs are celebrating after winning through to the semi-finals of the Prima Tiger Cup in front of a packed Welford Road.

Burton beat Holt 2-1 in a nail-biting quarter-final, which was played at the home of Leicester Tigers before their Guinness Premiership game against Harlequins on Saturday.

Burton took an early lead through a well-worked move that took them the length of the field before touching down. Holt struck back to level before half-time, and the game was finely balanced until Burton booked their semi-final place with a try from the last play of the match.

Meanwhile, a hard-fought game between Stratford and Ashby ended in a 0-0 draw. Under the RFU rules and regulations for tournaments, unfortunately it meant the tie had to be decided by the toss of a coin with the Warwickshire side winning through to the semi-finals.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “Congratulations should go to all of the teams involved for a wonderful display of rugby that was played in a great spirit.

“Full credit goes to Ashby, who were up to the challenge of the day and took the defeat on the toss of the coin with great dignity. They were a credit to their club and supporters.”

The Prima Tiger Cup, which is supported by Loughborough-based Prima Solutions, is now in its 15th season and is open to under-10s teams from across the country.

Almost 50 sides entered this year's competition, which began with local festivals at Stoke RFC in Staffordshire, Kenilworth RFC in Warwickshire, Swaffham RFC in Norfolk, Nottingham Boots Corsairs RFC and at Market Harborough RFC in Leicestershire.

Burton and Stratford now go through to the semi-finals, which will be played at Welford Road before a Tigers first-team game later in the season.

The second set of quarter finals will take place before Tigers' Guinness Premiership game against Newcastle Falcons on December 20, when Hinckley, Lutterworth, Wymondham and current holders Nottingham Boots Corsairs will challenge for a place in the semi finals.
