Preview | Tigers go to Wasps on Sunday

Leicester Tigers reach the halfway mark in the league season with a return to Coventry to face Wasps this weekend.

The old rivals meet for a second time this season on Sunday (3.00pm) in Round 13 of the Gallagher Premiership campaign following a Cup win by Tigers at the same venue in November.

Tigers also won in Coventry in the final round of last season when Dan Cole was among the five tryscorers at the start of the team’s unbeaten run which now totals 16 games in all competitions since June 2021.

Another victory would tie the club’s all-time club record for consecutive wins from the start of the season, set in 1983/84, and equal the best-ever start to a Premiership season achieved by Newcastle in 1997/98.

Between them, the clubs have 16 league titles since 1988 and have met 51 times in Premiership rugby, with Tigers winning 28 to Wasps’ 21 and two games drawn. Overall, the pair have met on 109 occasions with Leicester ahead 65-39 on win count and five games drawn.

In team news announced on Friday, Ellis Genge will make his 100th appearance for Tigers, with  head coach Steve Borthwick adding Ollie Chessum and Jack van Poortvliet to the starting line-up since the win over Newcastle last weekend. Jasper Wiese serves the final game of his two-match suspension.

Scrum-half van Poortvliet, looking ahead to Sunday, said: “Results have gone our way, but what has been brilliant is that Steve has not let anyone get carried away and our focus every week is on each game as it comes and trying to win that game.

“We are enjoying how it is going but the focus never changes week in, week out.

“The focus is not on the run, but just on the having the best performance we can and if that means we win, then we win. If we don’t, we will learn from it and move forward into the next game.”

Wasps make four changes to the team that met Sale Sharks on New Year’s Day with Tom Cruse, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen and Tom Willis joining the forward pack and Charlie Atkinson starting at fly-half. On the bench, Ryan Mills returns from injury for his first game since September 2020 and flanker Thomas Young is in line to make his 150th Wasps appearance.

Match referee is Tom Foley, who was also in charge of Tigers’ last away fixture, at Bristol on Boxing Day. This is his 108th Premiership appointment.

Tigers will wear the club’s change colours of white, black and orange.

There is live coverage of the game on BT Sport, or keep in touch with events using the club’s Matchday Live service on app and website. And look out for full post-match reaction on the club channels.
