Montoya proud of Tigers teammates

Julián Montoya spoke following the Gallagher Premiership Final defeat to Bath Rugby.

An emotional Leicester Tigers skipper, who played his final game for the club in the two-point, 23-21, defeat at Allianz Stadium, said: "We fell short today. We had some tears already during the week and then now in the changing room."

"I’m very proud to be a Tiger and I’m going to miss this place a lot. Today we fell short, but I am proud of the team. We kept coming back. People wrote us off before the game and we kept in the fight. Bath were the better team in some aspects, so congrats to them."

Asked about his time at the club as a whole, in typical fashion, Montoya refused to make the moment about him.

"Today is about the team, not any individual," he said.

"That is what is so special about this place, it’s about the team always. It’s going to be like that always."

On the game, which included a 9:5 penalty count against he and his Tigers teammates, he said: "We didn’t get the result. You can’t control what you cannot control."

"How you get out of those moments and come back is what you can control, and I thought we did that well today. We were on the other side of the call a few times.

"You embrace the heat and try to keep the momentum ... sometimes you have to get that momentum back. We had a few youngsters there today, and they stepped up. Forget about the bad moment, and that’s something the club can keep building on."
